The Maritime Institute, a Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business, opened in 1976 in San Diego, CA and soon became a national leader in providing the most complete, comprehensive and up-to-date USCG approved courses for professional working mariners with an emphasis on safety and environmental awareness.
Maritime Institute is different from traditional maritime colleges and universities, because the student body consists of individuals with an exceptionally wide range of responsibilities. There are private boat owners, law enforcement, active duty and retired military, commercial boat and ship operators from sportfishing, towing and passenger ferries.

Maritime Institute's Executive Staff
H. G. "Rags" Laragione, President and CEO
Mr. Laragione, known as "Rags" is retired U. S. Navy and currently holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master's License of 100 Tons; a Mates License of 500 Tons; with Assistance Towing and Auxiliary Sailing endorsements. In addition, he holds an International Yachtmaster Offshore Instructor and Examiner Certificate for both Power and Sail. He was a Master Training Specialist in the U.S. Navy and is a Certified PADI/NAUI Diving Instructor, and FAA Licensed Pilot.
Kathy Laragione, Director and CFO
Mrs. Laragione received her USCG Master 50-ton license in 1999. She has been approved by The National Maritime Center to teach or proctor numerous USCG Approved Courses.
Alex Hickethier, Vice President of Curriculum Development and Cooperative Degree programs.
He is U.S. Coast Guard Approved to teach numerous upper and lower level Maritime courses. Alex is a United States Navy retired Senior Chief Quartermaster and holds a BA and MBA in Business Administration from San Diego's National University and holds California Community College Teaching Credentials in Business and Industrial Management.

Kevin Baldwin, Operations Officer for Maritime Institute
Kevin is a United States Navy Retired Lieutenant Commander. He holds a Master 100GT Near Coastal License and an International Yacht Master Instructor and Examiner Certificate for Master of Yachts 200 GT Power. He has been approved by The National Maritime Center to teach numerous USCG Approved Courses. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Workforce Education and Curriculum Development.
Matt Gallwas, Instructor
He is a United States Navy retired Chief Quartermaster. He holds a USCG Master 100 Ton Near Coastal License. He has been approved by The National Maritime Center to teach numerous USCG Approved Courses. Matt holds an Associate Degree in GIS from San Diego's Mesa College.
Jeff Gunn, Instructor
He is a USCG Retired Chief Warrant Officer and holds a USCG Master 100 Ton Near Coastal Credential. He has been approved by The National Maritime Center to teach numerous USCG Approved Courses. He holds an Associate Degree in Environmental Science.
Dan Leininger, Northern California Regional Manager, Instructor
Dan is a United States Navy Retired Lt. Commander. Holds a USCG Master 100GT Near Coastal License. He has been approved by The National Maritime Center to teach numerous USCG Approved Courses He holds an Bachelor of Science Degree in Systems Engineering, Navy Master Training Specialist
