This course is a five day STCW-95 course to meet the Meteorology requirements for Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch.
APPROVAL:
Any applicant who has successfully completed your 40-hour Meteorology (Operational Level) course will satisfy the Meteorology training requirements for certification as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage (ITC). The practical assessments conducted in this course will be accepted as the equivalent of OICNW-1-7A; OICNW-17B; and OINCW-17C from the National Assessment Guidelines for Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code.
Applicants who have successfully completed you course need not present completed "Control Sheets"
for these assessments in application for STCW certification.
Course Syllabus Outline:
- The atmosphere, composition, physical properties and behavior
- Clouds, Precipitation, and visibility
- Atmospheric pressure and wind concepts
- Global pressure and wind systems of the oceans.
- Structure and behavior of surface frontal depressions (mid latitude low pressure systems)
- Structure and behavior of surface anticyclones
- Introduction to upper air concepts with emphasis on 500 Mbs
- Structure and behavior of non frontal weather systems
- Wave formation, propagation, and decay
- Introduction to tropical revolving storms
- Shipboard meteorological instruments.
- Recording and reporting weather observations
- Marine weather forecasting using facsimile charts from any source
This course will reinforce material taught throughout the week with daily exercises and homework. The final assessment will be a combination of multiple choice and fill in the blanks, drawing diagrams, and weather forecasting, using similar charts, practiced during the week.

I am currently a USCG-certified Standard Training Certification and Watch Standing for Seafarers (STCW) instructor.
My early career as a Naval Officer I saw extended tours of sea duty serving as the ships Meteorological Officer
I have worked as a marine weather forecaster for the US Navy, route analyst for a large private commercial weather and ship routing firm, and Senior Marine Meteorologist for NOAA/NWS’s Ocean Prediction Center.
Lee Chesneau has a B.S. Degree in Meteorology is a renowned and highly qualified Marine Meteorologist and has had an amazing career of analyzing and forecasting weather for government and private industry. We are privileged to have him here to teach this course. |
